Featured Route of the Month - December 2012

East London Canals (6.31 miles - Towpath)

The Clock Mill
The Clock Mill

We have chosen a London route for this month which is reasonably dry and runable despite all the rain and flooding which has been causing chaos across the country.

So this is an easy, mostly traffic free, route in the East End of London utilising Towpaths along the River Lea, Hertford Union Canal, Regents Canal and Limehouse Cut. Navigtation is easy but there is just the one tricky road crossing.

The area at the start and finish is known as Three Mills for obvious reasons. Two survive today ,the Clock Mill and House Mill. The Domesday Book, finished in 1086, recorded 7 mills on the River Lea in Stratford. These were tidal mills relying mainly on the rise and fall of the tides to drive the waterwheels.

Parking is at Tesco, Three Mills Lane, 2 hours free. Take great care crossing the very busy A11 early on in the route. The towpaths can get a bit wet after rain.
