I’ve just signed up for the New Forest marathon in September! Has anyone else taken part previously, or signed up this year?

Yes - I did this back in 2003 - I would definitely recommend it - it was well organised, nice scenery and not too crowded.  It is a bit undulating though and there is a long gradual climb at about mile 19 which is tough, but its well worth it!  Its also great for taking supporters along as there are plenty of nice places to stop and watch.

Hmm... yes, a few people have mentioned that it's got a bit of a nasty hill in the tail! I'll try and incorporate a luvverly big slope into my training around mile 20... nice.

Jules, I think you're right - it's supposed to be very beautiful too so it'll at least be enjoyable from that point of view. And I'm sure once you've done one, you'll want to do another! I'm stuck on one, and can't leave it there! The toughest thing might be in training through June/July/August... and with a world cup too!

I wouldn't worry too much about the hill - its always going to hurt around 20 miles anyway and it is gradual.  I have also done the London Marathon since and although obviously the crowds are fantastic at London, I actually enjoyed the New Forest more - at least you can see the scenery rather than just the people in front all the time and its easier to go at your own pace without being blocked in.  Good luck with the training.

Excellent, thanks Louise! I feel invigorated and full of optimism! I'll kick off by attempting to run home from work tonight.
