Hi Paul
I had a similar situation - the solution is to find a good "hybrid". Google your Hybrid Trail Shoe options as there are a few out there - but I eventually went for the Salomon X-scream, and I like them.
In my view they're more a road shoe with a good chunky grip and other enhanced trail characteristics, but I think that's the right way round. After all, a normal road shoe will work ok on trail, but a pure trail shoe will be very uncomfortable on tarmac.
Anyway - I've got a pair, I recommend them, and they've really helped me explore some of the lovely greenery near me. But I could happily cover 5 miles on the road and not feel discomfort.
