I'm coming in a bit late on this one but, you can't go wrong with a led lenser. The H14 is a little bulky and is expensive but its performance is astonishing. The H7 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenser-Rechargeable-Head-Lamp-Black/dp/B001PMP340/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378546791&sr=8-1&keywords=led+lenser+head+torch - would be my recommendation, it's very small, you don't notice it after a few minutes and I have run off road in really challenging conditions without any problems.... All for around £35 (if you shop around)... |

Another vote for the Alpkit one which has replaced my Petzl Tikka now. It's a bit more bulky with the battery pack at the back but you really don't notice when you're wearing it. There are a group of us that wear the exact same headtorches for night trail runs (so very dark and dodgy underfoot) and when there are a few of us together it's like running in daylight. Handy having the red light at the back really helps too for picking out where your mates are. Jolly handy for running on roads during winter evenings too.
For anyone who can hang on for March when these are back in stock, it's totally worth the wait. |

Liz Thanks for the advice. We did Night Terror last night and the Alpkit Gamma torch I bought thanks to you was head and shoulders above all others. As they are out of stock until March I bought Esther a Petzel one for £28 which is tiny and has a retractable strap. Its so poor Im going to try to take it back on Monday. Unlike most bits of kit its not really just an opinion. Once you see the Gamma work its a done deal and you wouldnt buy anything else. How can one torch be so much better and yet half the price ? I had people stick with me just to get the view provided by my headtorch. Fantastic bit of kit. Youre a very useful sister :) thanks |

The alpkit gamma is currently out of stock until March so I have opted for a low end Petzl [Tikkina 2]. It seems a nicely made bit of kit, easy to use, comfortable and lights up the dark country lanes on morning runs quite nicely. I suspect it is not as good/powerful as the gamma but does the job and costs £18. Pete

Thank you for this information as I had been considering one but thought they were too dear. I have now ordered one you recommended which means I will continue to go out with the running club on dark nights instead of not going. Thanks brenda |

I bought an Alpine kit last winter for £14 - best value of any running equipment I have ever bought. It has 3 phase front light with moveable angle joint and a red light for the rear. Reasonable battery economy... |
