Looks a bit fresh out there today. I'm off to the gym later...Southern softie I hear you all say! Kathryn, if she didn't wash the kit who would? There would be just a huge pile on the floor :-)

Frost on the car windscreen for the first time this morning at 4am, out for a nice long run of 9.4 miles, had running tights, short sleeved compression wear, two tops and a beeny, pushed moderately at an average 8:20 min/mile pace and felt quite toasty warm when I got back.

You really can't beat running on a really cold day, certainly have to be careful, but all that frost and ice.....especially if like me, you enjoy trail and cross country, it's fantastic out in the dales or peak district in the winter. best time to run in my opinion :)

haha Andy - It was in the Corinthian Club in Glasgow,  a bar thats open 24hrs...was interesting banter with the Glaswegians, people singing at you at 5am, claiming to love me etc. Very bizarre experience!

And this from the 24 hour treadmill man.... in a BAR! Well it looked like a bar anyway. I'm with Kat, when it gts cold I head for the gym or wear piles of clothing, which doesn't go down too well wiith the wife on the washing front.

Totally with you Martin! Love the freezing conditions, the less i wear the better, coming in with bright red thighs, lovely! Makes the cuppa better when you get in as well

I always wear spikes when the snow is compacted or there is ice and try to run on grass verges or soft ground, nevertheless I get through a pack of 15mm spikes through the winter as they do tend to grind down, but well worth the £1.50.

I have some Yaktrax for normal walking shoes and if I used them for training they might not last the winter as I still do 40 - 50 miles per week.

Dave one of my most memorable runs was last Christmas morning. There was compacted snow everywhere and no cars so I put on my XC spikes and ran a 10km loop right down the middle of the road. What a buzz that was....Next day the slush was showing through so I went out in trainers and slipped everywhere....definitely not as much fun!

Good post, Mark. I agree with almost everything you say - not convinced about the Yaktrax though, I saw some in a shop some time ago, and they looked uncomfortable to me. Have you (or has anyone here) tried 'The Screw Shoe'? Probably more suited to compacted snow or ice, and best inflicted on an older pair of shoes!

I sometimes feel safer running (slowly) than walking when it's icy.
