Last time I ran the Leamington XC we weren't allowed the pleasures of Beacon Hill or the brook - it was apparently too dangerous. It was still fun running in the snow! |

First XC for me this year is 12th Nov at Leamington Newbold Comyn, wonderful start all three divisions in the Birmingham league together on a 3 lapper, a killer beacon hill and a ickle brook to get one of your ankles wet and muddy. |

Yes Matt, its great to run cross country in the winter whatever the temperature but what i hate is the hanging around freezing before the off. I always try to get in the middle of the pack out of the wind and rain/sleet/snow. Once you get running it's no problem of course. Having said all that the first two XC races this season have been in tropical conditions and bone dry underfoot as well. |

Just completed today the last race of the year (and last minute decision to do so). Of all the races which I have completed in my first year of competition and apart from a full marathon, I never done a 5k. So on a wonderful snow laden course comprising of parkland, trail, pedestrian pathways and running track, a small but perfectly formed field of runners endured the elements. I surveyed one lap of the course and decided spikes were the only way to go, 12mm on the front as I wanted traction when pushing off and 9mm on the midfoot. A lot of runners were wearing trails and were finding it difficult on both the running track as it was virgin snow and in the trail area where it was rough and uneven lake embankment. There was a lot of poor times because of the slippery surface but I consider mine was quite good at 21:04 as my 10k PB is 41:58 in good weather, so really the footwear choice was critical in this instance as I could get a good pace on and not worry about slippage. |

Not run for the last two weeks, so went out for a 4K out-and-back run on a snow covered river path today. Car registered -3.5 C on the way down there, at 11am. Fell over once, but not while running - it was when I stopped to turn back! Fell on my hip, but thankfully not very hard. Strangely its my wrist that hurts (even though it was nowhere near the floor)? I broke that wrist when I was 12, so I probably just jarred it a bit. Can move all my fingers and there is no swelling, so pretty sure I haven't broken it again. Hope not anyway! |

We had a good downfall of snow yesterday, about 6 - 8 inches in old money, and as I broke up for work last night I moved my early morning run to mid morning. I must say it was great to (a) run in the light, and (b) get really involved in the deeper snow on embankments and fields as I consider this excellent resistance training for XC, so much so my scheduled 8 mile easy pace session turned out to be more of a higher heart rate steady session with some hill training on my favourite old mining spoil heap in the middle just to really get the ticker pounding. I did opt for the Inov8's as the snow was powdery even when compacted but I did feel slight slippage under foot so I think I will go back to the racing spikes tomorrow, maybe screw in the extreme 12mm spikes. |
