OVERVIEW Coalhouse Fort, has a Napoleonic and Victorian history, being built in 1861 whereas Tilbury Fort was first built in 1539 by Henry VIII and in 1670 Charles II re-fortified the site by employing Dutchman Sir Bernard de Gomme, who built the present pentagon design with projecting bastions. |
