Having missed 2017 due to calendar congestion we are thrilled to have Dartmoor back on our events list for 2018, where it will now stay and become a classic along with Brecon Beacons and Exmoor.
We have a superb location for our new event, set at Holwell Farm, close to the famous Hound Tor and Haytor plus the Dartmoor village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor.
Set in the heart of Dartmoor it means that you are straight onto the trails just the way we like it. Dartmoor in February can be a tough area to be, along with the routes taking in some tough, challenging hills and full speed decents.
As usual there are four distances on offer. All routes start and finish at the main field at Holwell Farm and head off over the moors towards Hound Tor and Haytor Downs. Whilst the 12K loop around great Hound Tor and head back to the finish the rest will carry on heading towards Yarner Woods. Circling the nature reserve at Yarner Woods you then head up the river towards Becky Falls and Manaton with the half marathon rounding Great Hounder and heading back to the finish after passing the famous Jay’s Grave. The marathon and ultra runners head in the other direction; skirting around Hammeldown Tor and Kings Tor before cutting left between Shapley Tor and Kings Tor, passing the old hut circles and settlements.
The marathon will head down to Challacombe Tor before heading back to Widecombe-in-the-Moor and up to the finish line. The ultra runners pass right around Challacombe Tor and into Soussons Down. Once through Soussons Down they will be heading down towards Corndon Tor, which is quite a trip. Once at Corndon Tor they make a sharp turn and start the trip back to Widecombe-in-the-Moor and then head up to the finish area at Holwell Farm.
