Hi Amanda, well done on taking the first steps back into running.

As Ian says, 10k is definitely possible. It depends a little bit on what sort of running you prefer, how frequently you will want to train, and what will satisfy you more. Some people are very happy running 5k (especially with so many brilliant Parkruns available), and for them it's a challenge to get faster and faster over that distance. On the other hand, other people prefer the challenge of increasing their distances, and focus their training around that.

Of course, the two aren't mutually exclusive! It doesn't have to be one or the other. But it might help to provoke some questions for you to thnk about.

I think Ian's suggestion is quite a good one - why not train up for a 5k and aim to take part in a Parkrun around May; see how you get on, and assess what you want to do next.

This forum is a great place to come for support from runners of all abilities and experience - keep us all posted and there will always be someone to share the highs and lows with!

Hi Amanda,

Fantastic news about beating the big C, and well done on your first run since.

As long as you keep a close eye on how you are feeling, (and listen to what your body tells you), then 10K in 6 months is not unreasonable.

A check up with your doctor might be advisable, to discuss your plans and make sure they are happy you wouldn't be overdoing it, but if you have been working with a PT to build up your strength then I am sure there will be no problems.

There are plenty of plans out there to build up to 10K in a number of months (12 weeks is usual, but they can always be adjusted out for a longer period if needed)

You could always do a 5K parkrun or two in the meantime to assess your progress. If at that point you find your goal of 10K in 6 months is looking too ambitious there is absolutely no shame in moving it out a bit further. After all, you are running for enjoyment and health rather than medals and accolades!

Best of luck with the plans and keep us posted on your progress!
