Thanks to you all for getting back to me. I confess to not doing a warm up, i do a fairly active job (chef) and run during my break in the afternoon i've always thought my job would provide enough of a warm up. My trainers have about 400miles under them is now a good time to invest in a new better pair? I shall research the ITB and hope what ever it is will go as i plan on finding a half to do locally in the next 6 weeks (fingers crossed) Thanks again Paul |

40+ miles a week sounds quite a lot for someone who's only been running for 9 months. I got a stress factor of my fibula when I built my miles up too quickly, training for my first half-marathon; after 6 weeks off I reduced my expectations, took it more gradually and have had no problems since. I still only average 25-30 miles a week, but my performance is improving on that so it seems enough for me, with some gym-based cross-training as well. |

I agree with Helen that it could be your ITB. I had a problem with this after doing some long runs and it was quite severe. However, after doing a week or 2 of the correct stretching it was completely cured so this could be good news! |

Hello Paul. Sounds like it might be a problem with your ITB (illiotibial band). Would be worth doing a bit of internet research to see if this seems likely. It can be quite serious so I would definitely look into this. Having a bit of trouble with this myself at the moment after running my first half-marathon.

Hi Paul welcome to GRG, With regards to your problem where do I start? A few things to consider are what mileage are on your trainers, have you measured your pronation, do you warm up/cool down after each run, do you do any stretches. Could be any of these and more that others will no doubt ask you, from that we may be able to indicate some probable causes and suggest a solution. Derek |
