OVERVIEW A shorter run from Maidstone Town Centre avoiding the potentially muddy towpath to the North of the weir and lock. The route is basically traffic free towpath with a few footpaths and a lock crossing of the river. You'll get a glimpse of Allington Castle across the river if you keep an eye out. Allington Castle was originally built in the 11th century. In 1281 the present stone castle was built, which was converted to a mansion in the 15th century. By the mid-19th century it was derelict, but was restored in 1905. Today it is a private residence and not open to the public. |
