Ever thought of coming to Sunderland? Not your usual tourist destination, granted, but in June 2013 this brilliant city is set to become integral to the ultra running scene in the UK, with the introduction of the Northern Cities Ultramarathons. Taking your first steps in ultra running? Then the Northern Cities Two might be the ideal introduction. Starting in Sunderland and taking in the course of the River Wear, through Finchale Priory, around Durham City past the Cathedral and Castle and back over the iconic Penshaw Monument to finish right where you started. A total distance of approximately 40 miles. Been there, done that? Then step up, the Northern Cities Three is waiting. From the start in Sunderland, follow the coast past Souter Lighthouse and on to South Shields. Cross the awesome River Tyne via ferry and head down through Newcastle, along the historic quayside. Crossing back over, at the famous Scotswood Bridge, you'll head down to Chester-le-Street and thence pick-up the route of the NC2, through Durham and back to Sunderland. A beautiful 60 mile route. Hardcore? 100 miles more your thing? Well, why not give the Northern Cities Four your full attention. Following the route of the NC3 as far as Durham the two then part ways. Taking in a cross country route to Stockton-on-Tees, the mighty River Tees itself provides the route to Middlesbrough where a crossing is provided by the glorious Transporter Bridge. And then it's a run up the Durham Historic Coast back to Sunderland. And then why not finish with a party. In Sunderland.
