Buy a pair of specialist running trainers Why do I have to pay for Membership?

We are sometimes asked why Good Run Guide is not a free service when there are so many free websites on the internet. Well, here are the main reasons.

Better quality content

Free websites don't usually produce their own content. They tend to rely on their members generating information and agreeing for it to be shared with other members. While this sometimes works it can result in vast amounts of information of variable quality that you have to sift through to try to find something usable.

At Good Run Guide we hand-pick our recommended routes, survey each one and produce bespoke maps and guides that are designed for use by runners. This is a major and costly undertaking but means you get high quality routes with usable maps and guides that are easy to follow.

No commercial advertising

Someone has to pay for the costs of producing the information, developing and administering the site, licensing software and data, and running the servers. There are only really two options: either the users pay a subscription or we recruit advertisers who will pay for the opportunity to try sell you things (or a combination of both).

At Good Run Guide we feel we can give you a better service if we don't have advertising throughout the site. This means that all the space on every page can be used for its intended purpose and we don't have to bombard you with marketing offers.

More reliable response times

Free websites inevitably have to attract very high numbers of users to generate sufficient advertising income as most people will rarely click on the adverts. This can place a big load of the servers running the website, particularly at busy times of day, resulting in slow or unreliable response times.

A subscription service can usually provide more reliable response times as there are fewer users who each contribute equally to the costs of running the website.

No "hidden charges"

Free websites will often provide some information for free and provide additional information or services for an extra charge.

At Good Run Guide everything is included in the annual Membership fee so that you know how much the service will cost upfront.

No ulterior motives

Large companies often provide free content to attract people to their site to encourage them to buy their products.

At Good Run Guide we have no ulterior motives - we don't want to to sell you energy drinks or trainers, just a genuinely good service.

Value for money

We think that £10 a year is a fair price to ask for the service we are providing and that it represents good value for money.

For £10 you could buy one local map, one paper log book or one guide book. Or you could have all of these and more with Good Run Guide Membership!
